As children grow up, they’re going to throw many struggles, both physical and mental. It’s a part of growing up, and it happens to us all. As a parent, there’s no worse feeling than seeing your child struggle. From the moment they’re conceived, you’re responsible for your child’s growth and development, which includes their health. Here are some things that you can do to ensure that your children grow up happy and healthy so that you can help them deal with the struggles and hardships that they may face.
Health and development reviewsAll newborns will get a series of health and development reviews once they’re born. These reviews aren’t mandatory but will always be offered, and it’s highly recommended you take your health visitor up on all check-ins. These are your chance to make sure your baby is growing and developing normally and to raise any concerns or questions that you might have. You might also consider investing in health insurance for your child to make sure that they’ll have the best care on hand should they need it.
Help them develop a healthy relationship with foodChildren are among the pickiest eaters in the world, so trying to get – and keep them on – a healthy diet can be healthy. After all, kids don’t necessarily know what they do like, and they don’t. While a balanced diet is important, it’s also important that you allow your kids to explore food - if you force them to eat a certain way or make them feel bad about eating certain things, you risk damaging their relationship with food which can cause serious problems in the long run. So, avoid categorising foods as ‘good’ or ‘bad’, involve kids in meal planning, don’t use food as a reward or punishment, don’t shame kids for eating/not eating certain foods and encourage them to eat the foods they enjoy – even treats – while teaching them about portioning and eating in moderation.
Get them active and engaged in exerciseIt’s important that kids are active, especially in their younger years and as they grow up. This is for several reasons, such as improved physical fitness, better socialising skills and overall better brain function. Getting kids interested in sports or activities when they are young is a great way to help promote fun exercise and is likely going to encourage them to continue exercising or taking up sports as they get older, Every child is different, and what they are interested in is going to vary. You can help them discover the activities they like by
Teach them about making good relationshipsIt’s important that kids understand healthy relationships from when they are young. This is going to, first and foremost, help them to make friends and learn how to socialise with others. As they grow and move through their school years and beyond, these skills, they’ve learned as kids will help them to set boundaries and maintain healthy relationships as teens and adults, too. All of which can be extremely important to their physical and mental wellbeing.
Help them understand and process emotions and mental wellbeingChildren learn most of their emotional responses when they are very young, so it’s important that you’re teaching them properly from a young age. Kids need to understand that whatever they’re feeling is valid, as well as learning what mental health is and how to cope with that. If kids don’t learn emotional responses and healthy coping mechanisms as children, then it’s possible that as they get older, they may struggle in the same way.
There are many ways that you can help your kids grow up happy and healthy. However, these are a few of the most common ones. Kids are complicated, and the way in which they learn about the world is largely down to their parents. So, use these tips as a starting point for that journey.
