When it comes to PCBs, we always hear people referring to the board with some of the most common words not even realizing once if these words might even have some technical term that would like to be referred to by. We have holes where the components go in, lines which act as the wires and the later which acts as the insulating plane.
But did you know that when it comes to the Printed circuit boards, we have so many technical names to refer to them that we hardly even know them as of yet? List of technical terms Since it is always better to improve our jargon especially when it is related to the field that we are associated with, we have compiled a short list of technical terms that you might be interested in.
1. Annular ring: It is the copper ring which is around the holes we have on the board. 2. DRC or Design rule check: It is a practice which has become quite common lately. The design of the board which is manufactured is tested for its functionality along with the width of the holes that are drilled in and the traces’ width. 3. Drill hit: This is what we refer to as holes on the PCB. Whether they are being used or not, in good condition or bad, we always refer to the action of drilling holes as the drill hit. 4. Finger: The term has nothing to do with what it actually means. The finger is the exposed part of the board edge between two boards which acts as their connecting point. You can find fingers in the boards that came with your old video games or memory cards. 5. Mouse bits: Just how mouse has the habit of nibbling away unnecessarily, the mouse bit is also the hole in the board which has been drilled to such an extent that it can shake the integrity of the entire board. 6. Pad: This is the exposed metallic part on the board where the soldered piece is applied. 7. Plane: It is the larger section of the copper on the board which might not have any paths etched on it but has definite borders, to begin with. 8. Paste stencil: This is the stencil on the board where the soldering paste is placed for soldering purposes. 9. Slot: It is the hole on the board which is not really circular. Boards that are made with such slots are often priced more than the ones that aren’t. This is because it costs more to produce such slots that are often not plated as well. 10. Trace: It is the ongoing copper line across the printed circuit board.
These are just some of the technical terms it helps to know about especially if you are getting a board made from a Ray PCB like RayMing Technology. It helps to know what you want and by using these terms you are sure to explain your demands better too.
