Polymers In Everyday Life |
Posted: August 31, 2017 |
Polymers are everywhere, from the material used in contact lenses to protective clothing like Kevlar; polymers have proven to be instrumental. A polymer is essentially a long chain of repeated subunits forming a macromolecule created by the process of polymerization. Being classified into synthetic and natural polymers, they range from synthetic plastics like polyamides (nylon) to biopolymers like DNA and proteins. Having a wide array of applications, polymers are an integral part of our day to day lives. Let us look at a few of the more readily used polymers which have found a substantial role in the economy. 1.Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC): One of the most widely renowned polymers due to its versatility is available in two forms; rigid or flexible. The rigid form finding applications in construction in cases for piping, making bottles and making payment and membership cards. In its more flexible form, it finds applications in inflatable products, phonograph records, signage, imitation leather, electrical cable insulation, plumbing, and many applications where it replaces rubber. 2.Polyamide: More widely known as Nylon, polyamides are strong, durable and moisture resistant. Having a good temperature resistance as well makes the polymer capable for applications in engineering components. A prime use would be for making parachutes. 3.Polycarbonate: Finding applications in high-quality eyeglass lenses, the polymer is believed to be one of the most versatile polymers. Being lighter and thinner than glass, the polymer also offers UV protection and a higher abrasion resistance implies you don't have to worry about getting scratches on your glasses. 4.Polytetrafluoroethylene: Also known by the acronym PTFE, it is a hydrophobic polymer that cannot be made wet by either water or water containing substances. Due to which PTFE finds applications in the cooking utensils sector. An example would be Teflon coated pans and other non-stick cookware. 5.Polystyrene (thermocole): Made from the monomer Styrene, the polymer is naturally transparent but is colored using colorants. Manufactured into two forms, solid and foamy. Taking account of its limited flexibility and soft nature, it is used for packing applications like styrofoam cups and takeout food containers. Being in the list of the most widely used plastics, the polymer is in between some controversy among environmentalists as the polymer is extremely slow to degrade. Thus, here we have a seen a few of the more common forms of polymers which everyone has had their hands on now and then. But the amount of polymers out there with different elements from the periodic table is quite immense.
