The Beginning Sanskrit - Script & Sounds course is a comprehensive introduction to the Devanagari script and the acoustic roots of the Sanskrit language. It covers the pronunciation of vowels and consonants, and incorporates greetings, songs, short stories, and easy-going introductions. The course also teaches etiquette phrases for easy discussions and basic numbers in Sanskrit.
This course is mandatory for students enrolled in the Introductory Phase of the Certificate Program in Sanskrit Proficiency. The course runs for one quarter, equivalent to one unit, over 10 weeks with 1.5 hours of instruction per week. The final test will be administered in the 11th and final week.
Samskrita Bharati USA (SBusa.org) provides the curriculum and textbooks used in the course. The course material is drawn from the SB - USA - published books ''ARUNA,'' ''UDAYA,'' & ''AYANAM,'' as well as additional relevant course content. The course is structured in a simplified series of practices that enables students with no prior experience with the Devanagari Script to begin listening, writing, and reading in the script.
The primary objectives of this course are for students to gain an understanding of the roots of the various sounds used in Sanskrit, as well as the pronunciation and writing of the Sanskrit script. The script is composed of single letters that can be either vowels or consonants, and students will learn the pronunciation and writing of the Sanskrit combination letters, as well as word formation utilizing these letters.
Moreover, the course provides opportunities for students to recite a few straightforward Sanskrit poems while paying close attention to the pronunciation and recite and sing along with some easy tunes. Additionally, students will have the opportunity to interact candidly with each other, enhancing their learning experience.
