Why Is Racial Profiling Wrong - An Opinion Essay |

When I was a young college student, I remember thinking to myself that it is really stupid why is racial profiling wrong? After all we are talking about human beings and race. Some people believe that some races are less or more likely to be violent offenders, thus warranting the government keeping them away from the safety of our homes. Some even believe that some races are more prone to serious crime. These claims do not hold water and are blatantly wrong. Why is racial profiling wrong? We are currently relying on statistical information to solve many complex problems in society. The problem with this strategy is that it is completely inaccurate and unfair. Using these statistical data to make blanket statements is not only unfair, but also makes one wonder if we are fooling ourselves or is our whole system flawed. After all if it works so well why would we want to change it? What I would like to do here is explain exactly why is racial profiling wrong and then offer some suggestions to prove that it is wrong in your own essay. The essay question is: "How do you know that what you have observed about a certain group of individuals is true?" If you are not able to answer this question with any clear sense of logic then I would suggest you look for another teacher. There are many different types of profiling techniques used today. You have the police department that will follow drivers around to see if they are speeding. The FBI has a form where they will take a person's personal information and try to come up with enough reasons to arrest that person. And then there is the drug task force who spends millions of dollars every year trying to find a drug which no one has ever seen. These profiling techniques work and are accepted as legitimate scientific methods. But, why is racial profiling wrong? First, this is an invasion of privacy. The police have no right to judge a person by their color or even a group to label them as suspect based solely on their appearance. This is considered profiling because it assumes something about the people being profiled without even knowing it. Another reason why this is wrong is that there is no scientific proof that race doesn't play a role in the crime rate in any area of the country. So, while these profiling techniques are acceptable, they are also pointless. rough draft essay who believe these techniques are right are often labeled as racist by those who don't. So, instead of criticizing essay quotes for profiling, why not do what they are doing and give them the benefit of the doubt? Now, I would like to present the argument for why is racial profiling wrong. The essay question posed above was about the profiling techniques. This essay discusses why the techniques are wrong. After reading this essay, you should be able to understand why these techniques are wrong. The first reason why profiling by race is wrong is that it assumes a person of one race to be a criminal. While it is true that each race has its own representation in the prison population, stereotypes are harmful because they lead to mass incarceration. Also, such profiling leads to false allegations of crimes being committed by persons who are not actually guilty. Lastly, this technique may result in false accusations of crimes being committed by persons who actually are guilty. Since the number of false accusations is very high, this is a major problem with racial profiling.
