Is your best friend asking you to cater her wedding? Of course, it can be very difficult to say 'no' to the person whom you have shared a huge part of your life with. But before you make a confirmation, it would be good to have a grasp of what you will be facing. So what are the things you should know before deciding to cater a wedding? Go ahead and check them out.
Self-Catering or hiring a caterer: Which is cheaper? One of the most common misconceptions is that hiring a caterer can be very expensive. It would surprise you to know that hiring a caterer isn't automatically expensive and, in the same way, self-catering doesn't mean that you can save a lot. So what is the most practical choice? It would depend largely on your choice of food, kind of meal and the resources available. On the average, hiring a caterer will cost about $10-$20 per person. The best thing about hiring a caterer is that they have the necessary equipment needed and they can do the preparation down to the subsequent cleaning. Also, most caterers already have restaurant catering systems or software for catering that will guide them in properly organizing and catering for an event. So if you take into account the work and equipment, hiring a caterer can be a practical choice. Self-catering, on the other hand, can also be a practical choice if you already have the necessary equipment to cater for a wedding or if there are equipment available for you to borrow. If it is an intimate wedding with very few guests, self-catering is certainly a cheaper choice. The kind of meal you want is also another factor to be considered. Take for example having a non-traditional catering like putting up a barbecue food truck, self-catering can be the most practical choice for this type of reception. Are You Incredibly Organized and Detailed? Remember that catering a wedding entails planning, shopping, cooking and managing the event. This is basically all about catering and if you want to hold one, then you should be incredibly organized and you must pay attention even to the smallest details. For caterers, this is where a catering software or app finds application. However, if you do the catering yourself then you must do all the planning manually. Of course, catering a wedding is not a one-man show. You also need to take into consideration if you can have enough help to pull off the show. Generally, there should be one person for each food table and another one for each beverage. A group of at least five persons should be assigned for the cooking and another five for the table preparation and presentation. Perhaps the most important consideration is if you have sufficient time to cater an event. Time should be calculated properly. The preparation itself can take up to 40 hours! With that, you can already get the picture how much time it would take to cater a wedding. So what is the best option? Again, it depends on the time and resources available.
