Many challenges are involved in designing and making garments, accessories, and other products that require sewing, and one of them is choosing the right thread. These days, manufacturers have access to more options—including specialised products like glass thread.
Here at Coats, we aim to provide the best selection of high-quality threads to suit different applications. This quick guide will introduce you to some of our sewing threads and their uses.
- Cotton - Cotton thread is the preferred material for quilting, patchwork, and hypoallergenic garments. High-quality ones like Coats Dymax are made of fit-for-purpose mercerised cotton for mercerised 100% cotton fabrics and dyeing end-use. We also carry a long-staple cotton fibre thread called Tre Cerchi in different colours for leather products, accessories, and delicate embroidery.
For post-dyed cotton garments, we recommend Dual Duty Supercotton to avoid shrinkage, elongation, and breakage. It also increases sewing performance with its superior abrasion resistance.
- Glass - Glass thread is a speciality product for applications requiring outstanding thermal stability. Coats Glasmo is a great choice, especially for filtration applications. It can withstand temperatures up to 593 degrees Celsius with a fiberglass material that won’t easily burn. We also carry it in an E-glass variant for thermocouples, spark plugs, and insulation wire assemblies.
- Polyester - Polyester is easily a go-to sewing thread for many hand- and machine-sewing applications. It performs well with stretch fabrics and effortlessly goes through the material with its silicone or wax finish. At Coats, we carry threads like Astra to increase sewing performance and productivity. The spun polyester thread produces long-lasting, durable seams that look great throughout the product’s lifetime.
For footwear, airbags, seatbelts, and filters, we recommend Gral EcoVerde. It’s a reliable polyester thread made of 100% recycled high-tenacity pre-stabilized continuous filament polyester that offers excellent seams, consistent stitches, and good loop formation with a soft finish.
- Nylon - Sewing light and medium-weight garments require a fine thread, like nylon. Despite its fineness, nylon threads like Coats Aptan are durable and resist heat from high-speed sewing without staining or breaking.
