You have a lot of objects or doodads at your place. You are looking for a storage space. You have almost found one. But now what? How do you go about it? How do you come to an agreement with the storage space provider? What questions to ask? Are they the best fit for you? Their experience? Reliability? Track record? Etc. So many things come to your mind when renting out a storage place. But relax. You need to seriously consider 3-4 essential ingredients to get a good deal and a satisfactory experience.
This is the understanding between you -- the renter -- and the storage facility - the service provider. Generally, the contract agreement contains conditions of what you can and cannot keep in the unit. It also stipulates when you would be able to access the space and also how the space is to be utilized. It also mentions what the rights and actions the center will initiate in case the renters are behind their payments. It may include selling off stuff from your stored items or a legal notice for recovery of dues. In addition to that, the contract would also have an agreement that in what condition the storage unit needs to to be handed back at the end of the contract tenure.
Commonly known as insurance. Some storage establishments require that you insure your good before you move in your items. This precludes the risk of taking any responsibility in the event of damages of the stored objects -- both for the space providers as well as the renters. Some storage depots do not require additional insurance of your goods if you have home insurance. For this, you have to check the local laws and position of the insurance companies if home insurance is applicable to stored goods outside of a home.
Typically a storage centre will charge fees for opening up your account and to follow other routine procedures as required by the authorities. This is a one time fee. Sometimes it is included in your security deposit and sometimes it is not. The lock and key have to be brought in by you and this will be a small investment for the safety of your goods.
In many storage units near you, you will that that there is a quick guided tour conducted by the staff of the facility for the renter, to make sure that he or she has understood the technicalities of operating and using the facility. For e.g. how to regulate the temperature in a climate controlled unit, covering of the stored items, precautions relating to electrical and electronic items etc. Hence, if you are thorough and through with all the technicalities, you can finally have your much-awaited storage space.
