Pallet Rack Safety Nets and Why You Need Them |
Posted: June 26, 2020 |
What Does It Do A safety net makes sure that products, pallets, or skids do not fall out of the back of your rack. Is this a big problem? The answer varies from industry to industry but the likelihood of this happening is present. There are a few more things that may make it much more likely that we will touch on later. However, if you have a product and you care about protecting that product so you can sell it later then you should look into these products. They are an important part of the matrix of safety devices that give your pallet rack the protection it desperately needs. Safety net - What is Worthy of High Praise Many companies talk about their product getting high praise. But, this is a nebulous concept because they never go into who is actually giving them praise or the reasons they get the praise. It is a problem. If that is the truth then they can declare themselves the best in the industry despite their own customers not being very happy with them. What they cannot change is how their product is made. Most companies are more than happy to tell you about the materials they use to make a product. In fact, if they are remiss about doing so then you can already tell that there is a problem. You should not do business with them. However, if they do give you an idea of the materials then you can, subjectively, compare that with those of other companies. It always pays to do your homework and, no matter the counter-argument of the salesperson, it is usually always best to consider your options before you settle on a model. What if I Use it as a Backstop? This is not a recommended use of a pallet rack safety net. The problem is that some models of these safety nets do not break away. If the net does not break away then your pallet rack must take the force of your, what we assume that you are using a forklift here, forklift pushing against the safety net. The constant force will warp and destabilize your pallet rack over time. You have to consider that each one of these pallet rack levels holds up to 2500 lbs per level. Imagine the amount of product you will lose, the damage that will cause to your warehouse, and how injured someone or a group of people will become if they are positioned in the impact zone of this fall. Good safety nets limit this problem by breaking away and failing before the rack does. Sure, you will lose some product but the fact that you could lose a full pallet rack worth of product is much worse. You also have to factor in the chance of injury to workers or anyone nearby plus the damage to the building. A lot of problems that are very avoidable by not using the safety net as a backstop. The ability of the safety net to give way before your rack does is a massive safety feature that should not be overlooked. What about flue space? Another question that comes up often is if this product helps maintain flue space. The answer is yes. It is one of the main reasons why many companies make use of this product. Simply put, this product helps people avoid fines associated with flue space problems. Keeping products out of your flue space is a good thing and also eliminates possible tripping hazards around the backside of your rack. Many people also wonder if the fabric will catch fire if a fire does start in the flue space. It is possible of course, however, your sprinkler system should be able to handle the problem as long as you follow all of your other guidelines from your local government. If you have decking that allows the water to pass through to the lower levels of your pallet rack and a sprinkler system with a good enough rating for your products then you should have no problems. The sprinkler system will contain the fire until someone arrives who is trained in putting out fires or it will put the fire out by itself.
