Many people perceive that the basic ingredient of learning English is grammar; however, this perception cannot be wrong because without knowing grammar it is not quite possible to form a sentence. With the proper use of noun or pronoun, verb, tense and object, a sentence is created to establish communication with people. Only by proper application of the tense verbs or conditional forms, your knowledge of grammar can be handy.
Creating a Meaningful Sentence
While teaching ESL courses, you should encourage the students to choose the correct subject form to initiate the sentence. Generally, the order of subject, verb, object, complement and adverbial is followed to make others understand what you are implying.
- The subject indicates the primary topic that can be answered with the ‘what’ or ‘who’ question.
- The verb indicates what action is going to take place in the sentence.
- Complement refers to the piece of information regarding an element of a sentence.
- Adverbial manages to indicate the information regarding place, time and manner.
- The sentence with double negative form always instils the positive sense of the sentence.
Native English speakers have the tendency to finish the sentence without paying heed to the grammatical order of subject, verb and object. You can advise your students to refrain from such uses of sentence structure and follow the conventional one as in official sector; the conventional style is only accepted. Moreover, while teaching ESL, it is important to enlighten the students with the niche of simple sentence, compound sentence and complex sentence.
