Practical Protection, a Washington-based startup has created an imaginitive, revolutionary fix to defend against the fear of mass shootings. The device, called the CoverMe-Seat, is a portable folding seat that turns into a high-caliber bulletproof vest. All in all, changing the seat to a vest takes about three or four seconds. The product, CoverMe-Seat, defends the chest and back of the user from hand and submachine-gun ammunition and includes an insert for a rear plate that can stop rounds fired from a high-powered rifle like an AR-15, which is why the CoverMe-Seat is more protective than standard vests, jackets and packpacks.
“No-one wants to think about staying safe from gunfire,” said Practical Protection's Founder, Aaron Ansel. “Our politicians should be working hard on common-sense firearm laws, which we totally endorse, but until that occurs, this is an effective, timely solution that doesn't require any laws to start using."
The stadium-style seat is more protective than most bullet proof backpacks because it shields the front and back of the person wearing it. Furthermore, with the auxiliary plate, your rear is shielded against high-powered rifle fire, which is something that almost no bulletproof product can do, at least not practically. The portable seat weighs 5.5 pounds, less than a gallon of milk.
One of the Co-Founders, Andrew Enke is an engineer who previously designed and developed spinal equipment. “We developed the CoverMe-Seat to convert into a vest within seconds. We designed the CoverMe-Seat around the idea that no-one is going to decide to wear a bulletproof coat every time they go to a public event. Our goal was to get around barriers to daily use."
