Why you should avoid petroleum-based hair products – Aura Sensory |

Petroleum is a common ingredient in many hair care products that are formulated and marketed especially for textured hair. Since textured hair requires less lubrication to remain flexible, ethnic shampoos and conditioners often contain this common ingredient. The most popular petroleum-rich hair care products on the market today are hair oils and pomades, which are almost entirely made of petroleum as the main ingredient. This greasy compound provides lubrication to the strands, but when used in excess it can be detrimental to hair growth. What is petroleum? Petroleum is an inorganic substance usually with semi-solid consistency that is made up of hydrocarbons. It is a very strong water repellent and is widely used in the cosmetics industry as it is cheaper to use as a filler ingredient than other oils. Problems caused by hair products containing petroleum Petroleum is excellent at retaining moisture inside dry, porous hair, which would not otherwise be able to retain moisture on its own. However, the petroleum-based hair product is too effective at its job and the barrier that oil creates on the hair shaft prevents the necessary moisture from reaching the hair follicle, which starts to damage it. Petroleum products work against hair growth in two ways. First, when applied to the scalp, they can clog hair follicles. This blockage can lead to scalp problems like dandruff or slow hair growth over time. Natural scalp oil, or sebum, also has the potential to clog follicles, but the additional petroleum products compound the problem. Petroleum-free, organic shampoo and conditioner with natural ingredients are a better solution to dryness and flaking of the scalp. Another way these products harm the hair is that the barrier that petroleum creates on the hair shaft prevents the necessary and additional moisture from reaching the shaft. Petroleum based products will make hair shine, but will not allow hair to hydrate effectively. Many people mistake the oily shine for healthy moisture. As users add oil or pomades with higher amounts of oil to hydrate the hair, the drier it will become. Learn more on Aura Sensory.
