Kota Doria is the name given to the indigenous type of hand weaving practiced in Kota of south Rajasthan. This art form was born in the villages of Kota and continues to thrive here. Kota Doria fabrics have a conventional checkered pattern created by differential beating of silk and cotton threads. These yarns are set in a square framework called a 'khat' which is a specialty of Kota Doria work. A fabric of about 46 inches in width has about 300 khats across it. Men as well as women create Kota Doria fabrics using the throw shuttle method on pit looms. The fabric is very delicately woven and boasts a wide range of patterns as weavers experiment with the khat size.
