A mural is a large painting that has been rendered directly on a wall, ceiling or any large permanent space. Traditionally, murals in community spaces depicted the lifestyle and culture of a civilization. The intention behind painting murals was to unify a group of people and connect them to their roots.Today, large pieces of three dimensional artworks are made which are not painted directly on walls, but fixed on after they are created. These, along with relief work which is done directly on walls at times, are known as 3D murals in the Indian art scene.3D murals are a more contemporary art form in India but mural painting has been around since ancient times. In Europe, murals have been painted on the ceilings of luxurious homes and palaces. The Fresco, painted on the ceiling of Sistine Chapel by Michelangelo is probably the most famous example of this art form in the world.
