    Botox Injections

Botox injections are mostly known for their ability to reduce the appearance of facial wrinkles.

Botox injections use a toxin known as Botulinum toxin to temporarily prevent muscle from moving. The toxin is produced by a microbe that causes botulism. Although Botox was the first drug to incorporate the use of botulinum toxin, there are other FDA-approved products that are now also using the toxin. Even though they are using the same toxin they tend to vary a little particularly on the dosage units hence they cannot be interchanged.

    Uses of Botox Injections

Botox injections work by blocking certain chemical signals (the ones that cause the muscles to contract) from the nerves. These injections are commonly used to temporarily relax the facial muscles that cause wrinkles around the eyes and on the forehead.

Botox injections can be used for both cosmetic and medical purposes.

    Cosmetic uses of Botox

Botox injections are one of the most popular cosmetic procedures according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

Depending on what is being treated, the effects of Botox are temporary and can last between 3-12 months.

Botox injections can be used for cosmetic purposes to reduce the appearance of the following issues:

    • Crow’s feet – wrinkles around the eyes
    • Frown lines, glabellar lines, or elevens – wrinkles between the eyebrows
    • Laugh lines in the corners of the mouth
    • Horizontal creases in the forehead
    • Cobblestone chin

    Medical uses for Botox

Botox is also used in the health sector to treat a variety of medical conditions. Botox is FDA-approved to treat the following:

    • Hyperhidrosis -severe underarm sweating
    • Strabismus or crossed eyes for those older than 12 years
    • Preventing migraine

    Preparing for Botox Injections

During a consultation with your provider about Botox injections, it is important to disclose whether you’ve had Botox injections within the past four months. Also tell your provider if you are taking any allergy medication, sleeping aids, or muscle relaxants. If you take blood thinners, you should avoid taking them for several days before the appointment date to reduce the risk of bleeding or bruising.

    Procedure for Botox Injections

Ice or topical anesthesia may be used to reduce discomfort during the procedure. Botox injections are an in-office procedure. Your provider will use a tiny needle to inject small amounts of botulinum toxin into the skin and muscles. The number of injections required depends on various factors such as the extent of the area being treated.

    Recovery and Results

Following the Botox injections procedure, you should avoid rubbing or massaging the treated area for about 24 hours. There is no downtime associated with Botox injections and you can return to your normal activities immediately after.

Botox injections begin working with one to three days of the procedure. The effects may last between 3-12 months depending on what is being treated. Regular, follow-up injections are needed to maintain the results.
