New IT rules take effect today

| The Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Amendment Rules, 2026 officially took effect today, February 20, 2026. The new regulations primarily target the growing threat of deepfakes and misinformation by mandating that social media platforms—such as Meta, Google, and X—clearly and prominently label all AI-generated or ''synthetically generated'' content. Furthermore, the government has drastically shortened the window for content moderation: platforms are now legally required to remove or block access to flagged unlawful material within just 3 hours of receiving an order from a court or authorized government official, a sharp reduction from the previous 36-hour timeline. For sensitive cases, the deadline is even tighter at 2 hours.
