The next time you're thinking about breakfast ''out,'' don't settle for microwaved eggs at one of the big chain fast-food outlets. (Yeah, you know the ones I'm talking about.) For not much more than the cost of a nuked egg on a toasted English muffin, you can have an actual made-to-order breakfast at the Shoreline Café on Main Street in Branford. They have regular menu items available every day, plus daily specials that range from chocolate-chip pancakes to mozzarella-prosciutto-basil panini, and homemade soups as well. They also have an extensive salad bar. But most of my visits there are for the breakfasts, which I have there at least twice a week. I first found myself there after getting tired of winding up at the same place for breakfast after church week after week, and now it's my regular Sunday-morning treat. I walk there from the Branford green, have a wonderful breakfast, chat with the very personable crew (most days including Wilson, the owner--a character if there ever was one!), and then go home satisfied and ready for the rest of the day. You can sit at a table (no counter/trough feeding there, unlike several other local greasy spoons), and listen to light contemporary jazz while you enjoy your food. Or, on nice days, you can sit outside, trattoria style, and enjoy the weather. I've never eaten anything there that was less than delicious, and many of their selections are fantastic. (I recommend the veggie-and-feta omelette with home fries and whole-wheat toast.) And all for not much more than you'd pay to get cardboard food at the Big M, the Big B, or DD.
