Carlos Alcaraz is a 19-year-old Spanish tennis player who is the new world no. 1 after winning the US Open on September 12. He is a top contender to win a Grand Slam title at Wimbledon in 2020 and has reached six ATP Tour finals already. He has also won titles at the Madrid Open and the Barcelona Open.
In his early career, Alcaraz reached the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament, reaching the Miami Open, where he defeated Albert Ramos Vinolas in the second round. At the 2016 Rio Open, Alcaraz won the ATP 500 event, defeating Diego Schwartzman. Alcaraz's most recent ATP tour tournament was the Indian Wells Open, where he reached the quarterfinals before falling to Rafael Nadal in the final.
Alcaraz started playing tennis at a very young age and started winning ITF tournaments before his fifteenth birthday. He won a number of ITF Futures tournaments and reached the quarterfinals of an ATP Challenger Tour tournament last year. He has earned a total of $863,798 through prize money and brand endorsements.
This season has been especially good for Alcaraz. He had been ranked 490 at the beginning of the season, but he has since moved up to 136 and is closing the gap with the top-ranked players.
