Discitis refers to infection of the discs between the vertebrae of the spine. Spondylodiscitis is the primary infection of the intervertebral discs with secondary infections of the vertebrae also known as spondylitis. This infection begins at the end plates and can lead to osteomyelitis or infection in bone. The infections travel through the blood and spread in the nearby tissues.
