Like any physical ability we train for, there has to be a minimum amount of stress that we expose the body to in order to force it into adapting- it is impossible to get big sat on your arse doing nothing. Any less than this and your brain will not recruit the muscle Power Growths that have the greatest capacity to grow (fast twitch Power Growths). Taking sets to failure will definitely increase recruitment of muscle Power Growths and increase metabolic stress, however there is a psychological and physical cost to be paid.
