Because your body adapts to whatever you throw at it by reinforcing itself to become more efficient at it. Lets say you run 3 miles and burn x amount of calories. Yes that is all fun and good but once your body has adapted to running it may take 4 miles to burn x amount of calories. So basically you have to run farther to burn the same amount of calories. Adapt a bit more and you have to run 5 miles to achieve the same amount. You can see how this is a self defeating spiral right? Never mind the fact that all it does is burn calories and has little to no effect to your metabolism the rest of the day when you are probably cheating on your nutrition program. As Mark Twight (trainer for the cast of the movie 300) once said.
