DIM and Indole-3-Carbinol (I3C) May Help Prevent Two Deadly Forms of Cancer |
Did you know that Dindolymethane (DIM) and indole-3-carbinol (I3C) may help to prevent both breast cancer and prostate cancer?
Well, it's true, at least according to nurse practitioner and health columnist Pamela Egan, NP-C, CDE, ABAAHP. Egan, an expert in metabolic and nutritional medicine.
According to Egan, ''As women age, the liver methylates (transforms) the estrogen into estrone, which is the ''bad'' estrogen that can lead to breast cancer. Regardless of whether the estrogen is derived from horse urine or bio-identical estradiol, when taken orally it poses a risk. The second reason that estrogen should not be taken by mouth is because when the liver metabolizes the estrogen, there is a greater risk of blood clots.''
''Interestingly, men with high estrone levels are at a higher risk of prostate cancer. For years it was believed that testosterone caused prostate cancer. This was disproved about 8 years ago and was published in the New England Journal of Medicine.''
''Indole-3-carbinol is a member of the class called glucosinolates. It is found in high amounts in cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, and brussel sprouts. Indole-3-carbinol acts as an antioxidant, can stimulate natural detoxification enzymes and supports normal hormone metabolism. DIM has similar health benefits. When taken as a supplement, the suggested use is 1 capsule daily with meals.''
While this can certainly be somewhat difficult to make sense of for most of us non-experts, the bottom line is that these two compounds (DIM and I3C) are now believed to be able to help men and women prevent prostate and breast cancer respectively. The mechanism by which this occurs related to the regulation of hormones, imbalances of which are believed to be at least in part the cause of these two forms of cancer.
For more information about how I3C and DIM can help to stave off prostate and breast cancer, see the attached link for the complete article on the subject. |
