Today we’d like to introduce you to Joey Farese.
Joey, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I graduated from FSU in 2014 and immediately moved to LA to start my DJ company. I only had $5,000 to my name when I first moved here and invested almost all of it into my company – I was down to my last $500 before I started turning a profit. Eventually, I started DJing so many events that I was having to turn gigs down. In 2015, I hired my first employee to DJ events that I couldn’t personally work. Today we have 5 employees who all stay pretty busy. Eventually, we wanted to branch out from just doing private events and started looking to the L.A. lounge scene. We now have residencies (places where we play weekly or seasonally) at The NiXon Lounge, The Marriott at L.A. Live, and Saint Felix Hollywood. All in all, I think persistence and professionalism got my company to where it is today.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has not been the smoothest path to success. The first 6 months I spent trying to build the company were really difficult. I was pouring all the money I had into advertising and was getting very little turn around. In my industry people want to see credible reviews from real people; and when you’re first starting out, it’s hard to book stuff without any past recommendations. It’s a viscous cycle because you need good reviews in order to book gigs and get more good reviews. I would definitely say the first 6 months of the company’s life were its most trying. That being said, difficulties continued to arise throughout the company’s growth. If you’ve never been on the question asking side of an interview than you probably don’t know this but interviewing someone can be way more difficult than being interviewed. Even today, we still face roadblocks that make running a business difficult, but I try to embrace every challenge that comes my way and remember that nothing worth doing was ever easy.
So, let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Electric Entertainment DJs story. Tell us more about the business.
We are a mobile DJ company. If you are throwing a wedding, birthday party, or corporate event, we show up at the event and provide the music. We provide the DJ, sound system, lighting, microphones – everything sound related. As both the owner, and a DJ for the company, I’m most proud of our residencies. I’ve always loved going to lounges and clubs and it’s a really validating feeling to know that popular nightlife destinations entrust us with the music for the entire venue.
Our level of professionalism is what sets us apart from our competitors. It seems like there’s a lot of super cool-hip DJs in Los Angeles but not so many super professional DJs. It’s important to treat DJing like a business if you want to succeed in the business world. It’s important to be timely and responsive with clients. It’s also important to remember that each client is different and needs to be catered to as such. If the client only wants clean versions of songs at her wedding, it’s important that we can accommodate that. Additionally, some events require a suit, others require a button up and jeans, but very rarely does an event call for baggy pants and a baseball cap. For us professionalism is responsive customer service, meeting the needs of each individual client, and looking sharp while doing it.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
We got our first residency at The Nixon Lounge in 2015 – that took a good bit of luck in itself. However, we really got lucky when one day the owner of Saint Felix walked into The Nixon. I didn’t know who he was at the time but he asked for a few song requests and I accommodated him. As he was on his way out he got my card and asked if I’d like to play at his lounge in Hollywood.
