A renowned expert in rheumatology, Dr. Micha Abeles is a former professor of medicine at the University of Connecticut Health Center division of rheumatology and, until 2016, served as chief of the university's section of rheumatology. Over a four decade career as a researcher, Dr. Micha Abeles collaborated with colleagues at the University of Connecticut and other institutions to further the scholarship on rheumatological conditions including fibromyalgia, Buerger's Disease, lupus, Raynaud’s disease, osteonecrosis of bone, and osteoarthritis. He also oversaw medical trials of a number of treatments, leading to the launch of a number of pharmaceutical medications. Currently, he serves as the principal physician of a private practice.
Dr. Abeles completed his undergraduate degree at Cornell University, and earned his MD from State University of New York, Buffalo. He then completed an internship and residency at Buffalo University. Between 1974 and 1976, he served in the US Army. Stationed at Fort Monroe, he ran the outpatient department and the rheumatology clinic. He began his career at the University of Connecticut in 1976, as a fellow of rheumatology.
Dr. Abeles is a member of the American College of Rheumatology and sits of the board of the Connecticut Rheumatology Association. He is the former vice chair of the University of Connecticut Health Center institutional review board.
