The ketogenic diet is a diet that significantly reduces carbohydrates by increasing proteins and in particular fats. The main objective of this imbalance in the proportions of macronutrients in the diet is to get the body to use fat as a source of energy. In the presence of carbohydrates, in fact, all cells use their energy to perform their activities. But if they are reduced to a low enough level, they will start using fat, with the exception of nerve cells which do not have the capacity to do so. Then a process called ketosis begins, as it leads to the formation of molecules called ketone bodies, this time used by the brain. Usually ketosis is achieved within a few days with a daily amount of carbohydrates of around 20 to 50 grams, but these amounts can vary individually.
