In contrast to its huge size, it draws far less crowd even during the peak season. It's remote location in the southern circuit where there are not many famous national parks give people an excuse to avoid the circuit altogether. But the few who make it to this area are blessed with an untouched, tranquil atmosphere.
Tanzania has a reputation of serving some of the greatest hunters in the world including Frederick Selous, who founded this reserve. The list also includes President Theodore Roosevelt who came here for game viewing and hunting in 1909. Majority of the game reserve is set aside for game hunting purposes through privately leased properties.
The vast Selous contains several varied ecosystems, and as per UNESCO estimates, there are upwards of 2,000 plant species in the park. However, a section in the northern part along the Rufiji River is specifically designated as a photographic zone.
Tnamed after Frederick Courteney Selous, “Seloo” is how he pronounced his name as opposed to how most people call it, “Selous”. The “S” at the end becomes silent. When To Visit Selous Game Reserve Selous has a pleasant, tropical climate, but undergoes variations which is influenced by several factors. The whole of Tanzania sees two season in general. These are:
The dry season in Tanzania lasts from June through October. During this period, it is easier to spot the wild animals as they tend to gather around the waterholes and rivers with the vegetation being less. There is little to no trace of rain and it is sunny most of the time. As a bonus point for tourists, there are few mosquitoes during the dry season as compared to the wet season, hence less chances of catching malaria.
This falls during the months of October to May and actually consists of two distinct periods: “short rain period” and “long rain period”. Starting off at the end of October, short rain occurs till the end of December. This period won't affect your safari trip. The long rain period is from March to May, January and February being the transition period. It rains almost throughout the day and humudity is high as well. The best game viewing experience undoubtedly will be during the dry season because that's when massive herds of animals are usually seen around the rivers and swamps. But based on your safari goals, budget, expectations, and preferred timings, you should pick your months to visit Selous Game Reserve. That being said, becuse of its gigantic size, sometimes the game viewing may seem quite frustrating as they are scattered and rather skittish (because of the lonliness of the park).
