Gangtok, the largest town and the capital of the state of Sikkim is located at an altitude of about 5,800 feet above sea level. Situated in the eastern Himalayan Range, Gangtok is frequented by tourists who adore the natural beauty and climate of hill stations. Darjeeling is yet another world famous hill station in India situated in the neighboring state of West Bengal. Located on the Lesser Himalayas at an average elevation of about 6710 feet above sea level, Darjeeling is also famous for the Himalayan Mountain Railway.
Though situated in two nearby states, Darjeeling and Gangtok are at a distance of only 97 km away from each other and can be reached within a travel time of about 1 hour and 50 minutes via road. Taxis are the most widely available mode of transport to reach Gangtok from Darjeeling. City buses are less in number to reach Gangtok from Darjeeling. Those who want to travel from Darjeeling to Gangtok generally make use of shared-jeeps and public taxis also. Four wheel drives are used to easily cover the steep slopes of the roads leading to Gangtok. Gangtok is connected to Darjeeling by an all-weather metal led highway, National Highway 31A. The highway also provides a link to the neighboring hill station town of Darjeeling. Regular jeep, van, and bus services link Darjeeling to Gangtok.
The group travel from Darjeeling to Gangtok, in a tempo traveler will cost about 19 rupees per kilometer, in an SUV will cost about 12 to 35 rupees per kilometer, in a premium vehicle will cost about 18 to 30 rupees per kilometer, budget vehicle will cost about 9 to 12 rupees per kilometer, mid-size vehicle will cost about 15 to 18 rupees per kilometer and in a luxury vehicle will cost from 47 to 160 rupees per kilometer.
The detailed driving direction from Darjeeling to Gangtok is as follows, head south-west on Hill Cart Road and pass by Dirdham Temple on the right. Turn left at NH 55 and sharp right at NH 31 A, turn right and pass by petrol pump on the left. Take sharp left to stay on NH 31 A and take the first right. Turn left and then turn right towards Zero Point Road. Turn slight right at Nam Nam Road, take the first right onto Kazi Road, after passing Sikkim State Legislative Assembly, take sharp right at the Secretariat Road and Gangtok is on the left side.
Gangtok does not have a railway station and the nearest railway station is at New Jalpaiguri, which is 74 km away from Gangtok. Gangtok also does not have an airport and the nearest airport is at Bagdogra.
