1.Uzbekistan was the major intersection of the Great Silk Road at its zenith. Goods being shipped between China, Europe, and India had to pass through this land, along with ideas, philosophies, and religions. As a result, great cities like Samarkand, Bukhara, and Khiva became regional economic hubs and bloomed with architectural wonders that still stand today. 2.Uzbekistan is a double land-locked country! 3.The capital of Uzbekistan is Tashkent. The home of approximately 2.2 million people, it’s also the home of Central Asia’s busiest airport. Most likely, you will fly to this city your Uzbekistan trips and it is here you will be enamored with its broad, leafy boulevards and many historical sites.
4.Uzbekistan has been the home of many great and world renowned scholars and poets. Names like Ali Shir Nava’i, Mirzo Ulughbek, Avicenna, Al-Farghani, Al Biruni, and many others have left their imprint on mankind’s acquisition of knowledge. It always amazes students of Central Asia from throughout the world to discover that some of the world’s greatest thinkers and innovators were from Uzbekistan.
5.Many great conquerors throughout history have prized Central Asia, including Uzbekistan. Armies from Asia and Europe valued the riches to be had and exploited them successfully. Legendary figures such as Alexander the Great, the Persians, Genghis Khan, and Timur left their cultural mark for centuries and linger in the architecture, language, and genetics. The most recent conquest was achieved by the Russians in the 19th century, but was relinquished somewhat with Uzbekistan’s independence in 1991.
6.Uzbek food is delicious! Every traveler on an Uzbekistan trips has given high ratings for its varied and savory dishes. The national dish is plov or osh, a variation of a rice pilar that is served with lamb and carrots. Prepared in a large iron pot (kazan), Uzbeks take great pride in its preparation. It is essential to serve this dish to important guests (like you!) and at all social events, including weddings, births, deaths, and major holidays.
7.Many languages are spoken in Uzbekistan, but the primary one is Uzbek. Uzbek is a Turkic language. When you are on your Uzbekistan trips it is quite helpful to learn a few helpful Uzbek phrases. Nothing makes an Uzbek happier than to know that you are making an effort to learn their language. Other languages such as Russian, Tajik, Kyrgyz, Turkmen, and Kazakh are spoken but only in various communities throughout the country.
