Since the war in Cambodia, no train has linked Bangkok directly to Phnom Penh. It is however possible to take a flight directly to the Cambodian capital or to reach it by bus or even by boat. Taking a Flight From Bangkok to Phnom Penh For travelers who value comfort and speed, taking a flight between both cities is obviously the best option. Currently, one major low-cost airlines, Air Asia, offers daily connections between Bangkok and Phnom Penh. Fares can vary considerably according to the time of year and the number of available seats. Air Asia flights depart from Bangkok at Suvarnabhumi Airport, to the South-East of the city and land at Phnom Penh International Airport, nine kilometers away from the city center. Travelers should be aware that both Thailand and Cambodia require international travelers to pay a departure tax before embarking on the plane. The tax in Thailand is about 15 US Dollars while the Cambodian one is a hefty 25 US Dollars.
Traveling from Bangkok to Phnom Penh by Bus or Boat From Bangkok, it is possible to take either a bus or train to the border town of Aranyaprathet and then cross the Thai-Cambodian border. On the other side of the border is a rather sad little town named Poipet. From Poipet, travelers can choose one of several different options: Travelers can take a taxi to Battambang, a city two hours away from Poipet. From there, visitors will have to find a hotel and wait until the next morning to take a bus directly to Phnom Penh. Reaching the capital from Battambang takes about six hours and is reasonably cheap. A second option is to take either a taxi or a bus from Poipet in order to reach the city of Siem Reap, most famous for being home to the Angkor Wat temples. Travelers can then spend the night in Siem Reap and, in the morning, take either a river boat or a bus to Phnom Penh. Taking a boat is slightly slower and more expensive than taking a bus but it also allows tourists to travel on a much more scenic route. Both buses and boats tend to leave very early in the morning, usually at around 7.00 AM. It is therefore imperative to be at the bus station or at the boat pier at 6.45AM at the latest in order to have enough time to book seats.
