American company Markforged has launched a new filament infused with Inconel 625 - a heat-resistant nickel-based alloy. In combination with brand-name Metal X 3D-printers, this material allows to print out parts for further etching and sintering into finished metal products. The Metal X system was developed as an alternative to more precise, yet more expensive laser sintering and electron beam melting 3D-printing technologies. It is almost identical to Desktop Metal’s 3D-printers - so much that the two companies have entered into a legal battle over the issues of intellectual property. 3D-printed parts then undergo etching of polymer and sintering, the result of this process is all-metal parts. This method allows to use cheaper consumables and is sufficiently safer, as the possibility of inhalation or accidental ignition of pyrophoric powders is eliminated. The main disadvantage is a high shrinkage rate of about twenty percent, which can be compensated by scaling at the stage of digital model development before 3D-printing.
Recently, the company announced the launch of the new specialised consumable material - filament infused with Inconel 625, a nickel-based superalloy that is highly resistant to corrosion and high temperatures. “Inconel is traditionally a difficult and expensive material to work with,” explained Jon Reilly, VP of Product at Markforged. “Before Markforged, many would have to wait for a contract supplier, invest significantly in mold creation, or purchase a powder-based process that requires intensive facility build-outs and highly trained technicians. Now manufacturing Inconel is fast, safe, and affordable.”

Apart from the new material, the company offers filaments filled with 17-4 PH, H13, A2 and D2 stainless and tool steels, and promises to soon extend the range with titanium alloy Ti 6-4 filament.
