How a deduplication-enabled solution helps in offsite Backup Modern Age is the era of big data. As time is passing by the requirements for the data storage is increasing day by day. In the past, the hard disk of the computer was used to be of few megabytes, but now multiple terabytes are the normal practice. This all data needs to be protected and thus the Cloud backup of data becomes necessary for the organizations. To store huge amount of data in the cloud storage requires a lot of storage space and bandwidth consumption. Different techniques can be used to avoid extra storage space and more bandwidth consumption. Backup Deduplication is used by the organizations to reduce the storage cost and bandwidth utilization. What is Backup Deduplication? The primary purpose of the backup Deduplication is to reduce storage space. What it really does is it will eliminate the duplicate data blocks while taking the backup or transferring of the data, in this way unique data will be stored and more storage space can be saved. It also helps eliminates the need for the customers for the investment for data de-duplication hardware because StoneFly can provide the services to their Clients. As this technique will transfer fewer data, more bandwidth can be saved, and it will also reduce the network load.
How can maximum results be achieved using Data Deduplication?
When the backup deduplication is enabled, it deduplicates the backup and saves them to a managed store. The storage location where deduplication is enabled is called deduplicating storage.
How does Backup Deduplication Work?
During Deduplication process, the data is divided into blocks. The uniqueness of the blocks is then checked by the special database which tracks all the store blocks' checksums. After this only the unique blocks are sent to the Cloud storage and duplication is skipped. For example, if the customer has ten virtual machines and all of them are needed to be backed up, and the same block is found in 5 of them then only one copy of this block will be sent and stored in Cloud Backup.
Data Recovery
During Recovery of the data the backup solution agent request for the data from the Cloud storage. The storage systems then read this backup data and if the block is present in the deduplication data store the storage system reads data from it. The recovery process is transparent and independent of deduplication.
Data deduplication in Backup and Disaster Recovery may require more computing resources such as RAM or CPU. In some of the cases, traditional no deduplication storage techniques maybe are more cost-effective. It depends on the Client’s requirement which services do they want to prevail.
