Let’s face it - finding clients is more difficult in a down economy. There is no way to escape the reality that there are more businesses fighting for fewer customers. That’s why it’s more important than ever to put yourself out there and start meeting your potential customers. Here are 7 great ways to do just that:
1. Join a Networking Group – One of the best ways to start attracting more business is to join a networking group. One of the most popular groups is BNI which operates throughout the United States. Go to BNI to get more information about their group and how it operates. You should also join your local Chamber of Commerce which can be a great way to gain referrals from other businesses in your area.
2. Attend Meetups – Another great way to meet people and prospective clients to is to attend Meetings, Expos, and Trade Shows. These are very common now and Meetup is a great way to find out about different events you can attend.
3. Social Media Sites – Social Media Sites are a terrific way to meet clients. Its faster and less time consuming than Meetups or Networking Groups but you have to follow up. You cannot expect to get business from someone you have only connected with or friended! You can, however, use this first step to introduce yourself and start a dialogue with that individual. Storeboard.com, LinkedIn, and Twitter are three great sites to network and get clients.
4. Zero in on Your Target Market – Who exactly is your ideal customer? Look at your current customers and that is a pretty good indication. Try to accurately describe your ideal client and then build your marketing strategy around your customer. What does you customer like, look for, or participate in? For example, if you are a dog groomer, chances are your customers like dogs. Blogging about the benefits of organic dog food would be a good way to get your ideal customer’s attention.
5. Use Online Resources – If you want suggestions or ideas as to how to grow your business, there are many great resources available online. For example, S.C.O.R.E. is an organization of retired business executive who are available at no charge to provide advice and guidance to business owners. You can ask questions online or see them in person. Another great resource is Bizsugar which has terrific business articles on a wide variety of topics and Small Business Wizadry.
6. Join Online Groups – Online groups can be another great resource for finding customers and getting more referrals. LinkedIn has thousand of groups. You can search for groups on a wide variety of interests and join the ones that will provide the most networking and learning opportunities. These groups are a great way to publish your blogs, links, and services to attract referrals and new customers.
7. Ask for Referrals – Don’t be afraid to tell your friends, family, and customers that you are seeking referrals. If you don’t ask for referrals, how do they know you are looking? You have to put yourself out there in a direct but appropriate manner and ask for referrals and tell people you are looking for business. You will be amazed how much business you can receive just by handing out your cards, telling people what you do, and asking for referrals. I have a friend who is a realtor and he routinely knocks on doors of homeowners to introduce himself. The more people you meet the more people will know about you and your service.

A great strategy usually involves multiple layers of attack. Great rainmakers do all of the above. Start to implement these seven strategies and watch your business grow.
