If what goes around comes around, then Mark Zuckerberg will be receiving a wind fall return on his charitable giving, though the return may not necessarily be a dollar for dollar investment, but be a return of something else lovely. The tally is in according to The Chronicle of Philanthropyand Zuckerberg and his wife appear to be the second largest donors right behind Warren Buffet who was #1 in the U.S. for charitable contributions. Both appeared in the top spots of the nation's most generous philanthropists.
The Chronicle of Philanthropy released its annual Philanthropy 50 this past weekend. Zuckerberg and wife Priscilla Chan, gave nearly half a billion dollars ($498.8 million) to theSilicon Valley Community Foundation, according to The Chronicle of Philanthropy.
The founder and CEO Facebook was the first of the three tech-industry billionaires who appeared in the top five U.S. philanthropists. Four was Paul Allen, Microsoft co-founder with $309 million in contributions primarily to the Allen Institute for Brain Science. And Five was Sergey Brin and his wife Anne Wojcicki, co-founder of genetic-testing company 23andME. Brin is Google's co-founder. Brin and his wife donated $223 million to their Brin Wojcicki Foundation. Sandwiched between Zuckerberg and Paul Allen as the third largest U.S. donors are John and Laura Arnold. Arnold is an American hedge-fund creator. Together they donated $423.4 million to their foundation and various causes.Three of the top five largest contributors to charities are all under forty, with Buffet and Allan being the "old men" of the group.
Zuckerberg's group, the Silicon Valley Community Foundation gives out grants for various causes in the San Francisco area. Its charitable causes included creating programs to teach English to immigrants and giving food and shelter to groups assisting those in poverty and those who have been displaced by disasters, for example, victims of the California wildfires. These were projects for the year 2012.
