Please Listen to Me
I think we all have a t-shirt that reads "Please Listen to Me "...
We can really discount the value of being heard in this society, sometimes.
The simple act of listening without worrying about what to say is such a gift to someone hurting. Not everything is a cry for a solution. Some cries are just that--cries of personal pain. But we're geared to help, to fix...that's our job and helping or fixing is how I know I'm doing my job.
And that's what matters, right?
Next time you see someone suffering do this: Nothing. Sit with the person and listen. You won't even need to talk; your presence will say it all -- " I see your pain. I'm here and you matter to me".
