How to Destroy Depression [Without Power Tools]
I'm not much for destruction in general, but this is gonna be fun.... There's nothing Depression hates more than the following items... see for yourself what she has to say about each of her Top Ten. Bombs away! ----------------------------------------------------- 1. Support When you call upon your little circle of support, like friends and family members, I start to worry. Reaching out to others means you are not isolating. Which I'm counting on. Here's hoping your little circle is too depressed to call you back... 2. Talking it Out Visiting your therapist, particularly to address your sadness, is number 2 on my Hate List. Choosing to bravely work through your feelings and not hide in addiction? Are you kidding me? Oh, this is NOT gonna be pretty... . 3. Physical Activity When you exercise or involve yourself with other forms of physical activity, I can't take hold of your body and mind. One of the things I reeeeeally hate is seeing exercise show up in your commitment to self-care, particularly during stressful times like holidays. 4. Mindfulness Engage in mindfulness based living, and I lose the ability to sneak into your subconscious and make you replay the past. Mindfulness robs me of my most powerful weapons; guilt, shame and fear! Curse you, meditation! 5. Self Acceptance When you embrace ALL the parts of your life, including me, you actually make me smaller and that plain sucks. That which you fear controls you but that which you face, you begin to control. I've got an idea...let's go have a beer and forget all this nonsense... 6. Happiness When you decide to have a happy day, you seriously mess me up. Seriously. See, when you choose how your day will be and you choose happiness, I might as well pack my bags. 7. Laughter You have NO idea how much I hate it when you laugh! Any time you seek out humor or things that are fun, I have to work twice as hard to get your attention. Watching a funny movie or making light of something "serious" about yourself is like a gun to my head. 8. Healthy Diet I love it when you stress eat! Another reason holidays rock..... no shortage of junk food! So put down the smoothie and let's get some eggnog! A little bourbon wouldn't hurt, either... 9. Choice When you realize you have a choice to think and feel as you wish, I could just cry...and the crying is YOUR job, remember? I don’t like it one little bit when you become aware that your choice is the only thing I can't control. ....hey, who hid all the cookies? 10. Recognize Patterns Ever notice how I visit you on a situational basis? Wintertime, no sunshine..works for me! Holidays, drama, crazy families--I'm in depression heaven. Sidenote: enough already with the affirmations and "this too will pass" crap. Geez...one would think you're TRYING to get rid of me... ------------------------------------------------ Got room for one more? Most of all, most of all depression doesn't want you to see the Real You.
