Are We Really Independent |

If you ask many college students what their opinion is about the meaning of "are we really independent?" they will most likely respond with a resounding "no." As college students move into adulthood, they often begin to question whether or not they are truly independent in the ways they approach the world. Independent thinkers believe that all of us are somewhat self-sufficient, that without our reliance on others we would have no reason to be independent. Unfortunately, this belief is widely mistaken. In reality, there are many students who are dependent on professors and classmates for their entire education and thus feel they are not self-sufficient. However, a rose for emily essay to note that self-reliance does not mean that one is somehow "more" or "better" than those who are not self-reliant. So, how do we know if we are truly independent? The best way to look at this question is via a philosophical experiment. Imagine two individuals walking down the street. One is a doctor, the other is an engineering major. Now, one of the students is asked, "What do you think of your father?" (The doctor will answer "He is very independent.") And the other student is asked, "Do you think of your mother as independent?" (The engineering student will answer "Yes, she is very independent.") Which do you think would have more influence on your beliefs about yourself? Would it have been easier to be independent if your mother was a doctor or would you have chosen to be more independent if your mother was an engineer? This question is important because it shows that in reality we are not as independent as we may perceive ourselves to be. In this day and age most people are not as self-sufficient as they were back in the days when their parents were home making most of the money for them. Many of the jobs that we now have require that we work long hours with our minds focused on many things. Yet in many cases we still are not completely self-sufficient. For instance, many students are majors or certificate holders in subjects that are not closely tied to work or home. However, if we are to ever move towards becoming more independent and achieve true self-sufficiency then we need to re-evaluate our priorities. Many of us are working longer hours than we ever did before in our lives. Most of us are also working with a boss who is more or less dictating to us what to do and how to do it. One way in which we can become more self-sufficient is by going back to school and getting a bachelor or a master's degree. In today's economy many are choosing to go back to college and get an education. Not only will a higher education help you improve your employment opportunities but you will also find yourself with a larger bank account once you graduate. Many are also beginning to see online courses and distance learning as another way in which we can increase our earning potential while we are still in school. College today is more important than ever which is why so many adults are returning to school. Many are also starting to see online courses as a great way in which they can get their degree while still having flexibility and time management issues. So, are we really independent? Unfortunately, no. One reason that many adults are beginning to think that they aren't truly independent is because of the increasing number of jobs that require you to be more self-sufficient. For example, many jobs now require that you are able to run a computer, run a fax machine, take care of financial affairs and even answer the phone all on your own. While these are all important jobs and are certainly crucial to being successful, are we really independent? If essay on deforestation and its effects are currently running one or more of these types of "on the job" type positions then you are probably already feeling the effects of being "dependent." So, are we really independent? Dependent, yes. But independent? I would say that depending on the definition you choose to use, most of us are not. So what do you think? Is there a better way to look at this issue? Is there a certain lifestyle you would prefer, or a certain set of circumstances that would make you say, "I am independent?" Consider this in 2021.
