The pan slopes to the drain, so its’ important to look into the placement (i.e., center, right, or left) when designing the shower. The shower drain assembly should link the pan to the pipe under the shower. With that in mind, be sure to get the right size. The pipe size for shower drains is usually recommended to be two inches. Most tubs have 1.5-inch pipes. Why the difference? Because shower pans are shallower compared to tubs, so an overflow is likely to occur. With a bigger pipe, you can drain quicker. If you need to replace an old tub with a stand-up shower, additional plumbing is necessary for the two-inch pipe.
