A good bed is important to all dogs but particularly to large dogs. Big dogs need big beds and should not be forced to sleep in a cramped bed. Dogs spend over half their lives sleeping, usually 12 to 14 hour a day. They also have sleep pattern very similar to humans, they have light sleep periods and periods of deep sleep known as the REM (rapid eye movement) or dream stage. Often times a dog will curl up in a tight ball to sleep, but when they are in that position, they are usually not getting deep sleep and are easily awakened. Usually when a dog is in the deep sleep stage, he will be stretched out on his side, taking up lots of space. This is when you will often see his legs moving, tail wagging and sometimes even barking or howling. Your dog is having a great dream! Just like humans, it is important to your dogs health that he get plenty of REM sleep. He needs a bed where he can fully stretch out so he can chase those dream squirrels! You also need to remember that large canines often have joint problems, this can increase with age. It is important to your dogs health and well being that he has a bed that will supply him with excellent support. This will save your buddy from a lot of pain! With an extra large dog, finding a large enough bed can be a problem. Not many pet stores carry products for extra large dogs, you will rarely see a bed big enough for your dog at any retail store. The best place to look is online. Online you will find a variety of dog beds for large dogs. Some are even big enough for two extra large dogs! Orthopedic, memory foam, puppy beds, outdoor beds, Heated Dog Beds and dog beds for large dogs can all be found online. And you can find one that is as big as any dog on earth.
