OK, Storeboard.com doesn't have a Person Of The Year award, but if it did it might give the award to Paul Salopek, who is in the midst of a 7-year, 21,000-mile walk around a large part of the world.
Salopek, 51, isn't walking long distances for the typical reasons -- raising money for a charity, adventure, or athletic achievement.
Instead, the two-time Pulitzer Prize winning journalist is on this journey because "I am in pursuit of an idea, a story, a chimera, perhaps a folly. I am chasing ghosts. Starting in humanity’s birthplace in the Great Rift Valley of East Africa, I am retracing, on foot, the pathways of the ancestors who first discovered the Earth at least 60,000 years ago," he wrote in the first of his 7-part (once a year) series in National Geographic magazine.
Salopek, pictured above walking with two camels, began his journey about one year ago in Ethiopia's Rift Valley, where early men lived. His trip will take him from Africa, through the Middle East, across Asia, over to Alaska, down the western United States, then Central and South America, ending in Tierra del Fuego, Chile. The New York Daily News has a map of his route.
Salopek might deserve Storeboard.com's Person Of the Year award, if there was such a thing, because Storeboard.com aspires to connect people from all over the world for business and social purposes. If you click "World" near the top left corner of your screen right below "Storeboard.com New York," you will see a list of about 200 nations. When you click a particular nation, you will see news and other information from that nation -- in that nation's primary language.
In addition, Storeboard.com runs a column each week on what is happening in the world's seven continents. Salopek will walk in Africa, Asia, North America and South America, but not in Europe, Australia and Antarctica. His trip is projected to end in 2019.
After one year, Salopek is healthy. He said his biggest health problem has been blisters.
