I have only seen two movies in the past year where the audience spontaneously applauded at the end: Hidden Figures and Get Out Both outbursts were well deserved and both movies accomplish similar missions by wildly different means: shining a bright light on racism and inequality in America. Yes, just as we saw in Until Dawn, sometimes characters are simply doomed for no reason. Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark is in theaters now. Above: Welcome to Man of Medan, the first game in The Dark Pictures Anthology. The copy of Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark by Alvin Schwartz that I used to check out was heavily dog-eared and torn at the edges (it looked like it belonged in a scary story).
The stories are linked together as if coming from a comic book, narrated by the ghostly character known as The Creep. There are a number of consistent themes throughout this anthology, one of the most visually stunning horror movies of all time. Thematically, The Nameless is similar to Jaume Balaguero's later film Darkness; there's a similar feeling of hopelessness and despair, a creeping horror that doesn't let up, topped off with a horribly downbeat ending. As the player, you control all of the characters at one time or another.
15. Pet Sematary (1989) "Sometimes, dead is better." Stephen King's vicious and horrifying tale about a family's grief gone disturbingly wrong became an emotionally explosive and creepy film from director Mary Lambert, who plays up the melodrama and lets King's strange supernatural storytelling speak for itself.
That night on the SS Ourang Medan all the crew died at the hands of ghostly figures. Short films, like short stories, are qualitatively different from features and allow different types of stories to be told, and the creators showcased in this years shorts program delivered on that promise.
13. Gerald's Game (2017) Carla Gugino and Bruce Greenwood play a married couple looking to rekindle their sex life, but when he handcuffs her to the bed and then falls down dead of a heart attack, their weekend getaway becomes the ultimate nightmare.
