You must be wondering what good is a malemine particle board if it damages easily. However, if you know the right technique to cut it, you can use it to your advantage. Melamine faced chip board is made up of a combination of plastics and formaldehyde that forms a resin and is then pressed into a board (or other material). A melamine board can be used for furniture, veneer, insulation material, etc. Melamine Board, also known as conti-board and malemine faced chipboard can be vastly used for many applications such as kitchen cabinets and bedroom wardrobes, etc.
1. Before you cut a melamine board, it is important to know where you are going to be cutting it. All you need is a straight edge, pencil and a measuring tape. Always continue with the line down both edges of the board while adding the line along the edge that will keep the line board lined up correctly with the blade.
2. The vibration and torque that comes with the table saw is forceful enough to rip apart the malemine faced chipboard. In order to prevent it from getting damaged, it is better to decrease the vibration that is exerted on the board. A 2-inch wide painter’s tape works perfectly for measuring. After the board is properly measured and a cut line is drawn, you can place the tape along it. Place the tape on the side of the board you wish to have facing out. Cut the board always on the reverse side
3. While you are using a table saw, place the board on the table behind the blade and push the saw into the wood. Usually with other saws, you often do the reverse. When you push the board on to the table, you are more likely to get it damaged, splinter, crack, chip and break. You can use the torque of the blade to your advantage by pulling the board into the blade while maintaining a stiff grip.
4. A melamine board is thin and flimsy, so if you use a table or hand saw to cut it, it will end up damaging the board. Particle board is a good choice for furniture and a good base for a melamine board veneer. If you want to cut the board without damaging it, fix it to the particle board of the same size. Use clamps around the sides to secure it in place and then cut the board.
The best advantage of a melamine faced chipboard is that it really does not require any finishing. Once the unit is constructed, it is ready to fit into position that requires no more additional treatment. The timber and plywood options would need further treatment with several coats of finish, including sanding between each coat. This can take a long duration of time.
