Toggle switches are among the most common electronic components that you can ever find. A toggle switch has numerous applications, but the most common one certainly is turning a device on or off. A toggle switch can also be used to switch between two different devices. There are toggle switches with a center position for cutting the power that goes to both of the connected circuits. There are also toggle switches which only have two positions which means that the user can choose between using the toggle switch to switch between two devices or simply activating one. The way you wire your toggle switch will determine how many devices it will be able to control.
- Safety should always be your number one concern so make sure you turn off your device and disconnect its power supply. Now strip a quarter of an inch of the power supply wire insulation. You can use wire strippers for more convenience. You should also strip the end of the hot wire from the device you want to connect to the toggle switch.
- Now you have to connect the wire for the power supply to one of the terminals on the outside. Different switches are sometimes wired differently so make sure you take the terminals into consideration and wire them accordingly. You can connect the wire by pushing the wire into the clamp (when dealing with a spring clamp terminal), by wrapping the wire around the screw and then tightening that screw (when dealing with a screw terminal), by soldering the wire to the lug, etc.
- Connect to the toggle switch central terminal the hot wire from your device. Make sure to use the method that is appropriate for your type of toggle switch when doing this.
- Now all you have to do is turn the power back on and flip your toggle switch to the other side in order to connect the power to your device. If you want to easily turn the power off, simply flip the switch to the other side.
- If you want to connect two devices to a single toggle switch you will have to connect the wire for the incoming power supply to the central terminal of the switch. Then you have to connect the power wire of your first device to an outside terminal and the power wire of your other device to the remaining free outside terminal. When you flip the switch to one side you will turn on one of the devices and flipping it to the other side will turn on the other device shutting the first one off. If you flip the switch in the center position, both devices will be turned off (assuming there is a center position on your toggle switch).
