TikTok takes teenage crown, becoming largest demographic of users |

Social media has, since it was developed, been seen as an industry aimed more at the young as opposed to the old. Yet this is not strictly the case; many social media platforms are large enough to sustain a multi-faceted number of users. However, naturally, companies are looking to try and tap into networks which are known to have many younger users. The idea is simple: capture someone in their youth, and they could be a customer for the rest of their lives. However, this has led to many companies looking to find the best social media market to target the next generation. Well, it was noted by experts Globalwebindex in 2019 that 41% of TikTok users are aged 16-24. This shows you that this is an app that is being used massively by the younger generation. With some 800 million unique users per month, too, this is an app with a massive number of young people both locally and internationally. It is little wonder, then, that many companies look to invest in and buy TikTok likes. If you have such massive competition to try and overcome, then it does make sense to try and get ahead of them by using social media tools to your advantage. Why is TikTok so big among the younger generation? There are many reasons why TikTok has managed to secure this kind of future for itself as the ‘app for kids’, so to speak. Part of the reason comes from the fact that it is literally designed to try and target the young – this is an app that, by design, targets the kids. The app was always targeted at people being aged 18 and under; this was always going to be the primary audience for the app. Other social media channels try to be the ‘broad church’ that allows for as many people as possible to get involved. Instead, TikTok looked to heavily focus on younger people as it seen them as the ideal people to build brand loyalty towards. The audience was clearly defined from day one, and every feature and addition is done to make the app more feature-heavy, more effective, and to give its creators more chance to really think outside the box and be unique. Compare that to other social media channels that cater to an older audience and try to simplify the app. TikTok has managed to build a massive network of people because it has become so upbeat and friendly, too. While other social media channels are loaded with conspiracy, negative news and other such drastic details, TikTok is a site full of young people singing, dancing, and generally having some kind of comedic fun. It isn’t just the demographic, then, that helps to make TikTok shine. Instead, it is the sheer number of people who find the app uplifting, refreshing, and a less cynical take on social media that has become so prevalent on other popular channels across the web.
