Can you imagine accomplishing a goal after 35 years? That's exactly what Diana Nyad did yesterday when she became the first person to swim from Cuba to Florida without a shark cage. What's more Diana Nyad is 64 years old! What can we learn from this amazing accomplishment?
1. Put In The Time and Effort - Steve Jobs said that every worthwhile endeavor that he undertook required about 4 years to accomplish. Diana Nyad took 35 years! Great accomplishments take time and effort. Michael Jordan - arguably the greatest athlete in his sport was the first one to arrive at practice every day and the last one to leave. Now, if Michael Jordan saw the need to improve upon his game, what does that say about you and I? Time and Effort are two key ingredients in any success.
2. Keep Learning and Improving - Never Quit - Can you imagine how many times Diana Nyad wanted to quit. After 35 years of trying to accomplish her goal, she probably considered quitting numerous times but she never did. On the way to accomplishing a goal, there could be times when it looks hopeless or you feel down. Take a step back and analyze what's working and what's not. Get some advice from people who are more accomplished in your chosen field. Try to implement some changes and again, observe what is working and what's not. Little by little, you will move closer to accomplishing your goals.
3. It's Never Too Late (And Don't Make Excuses) - Diana Nyad accomplished her goal at age 64! Can you imagine all of the reasons she could have given up. Can you imagine getting your Doctor's permission to swim this distance at any age let alone at 64? But she did it. If Diana Nyad could accomplish this, then there is no reason you cannot accomplish your goals at any age. Set your goals and commit them to writing. Don't make excuses and move forward.
Diana Nyad's accomplishment can inspire everyone to greater success. Success doesn't happen overnight. It takes time and hard work. Never give up on your goals. Keep learning and improving. Little by little the tweaks and pivots you make will lead you to greater success. It's never too late and don't make excuses. Diana Nyad didn't!
