This Year Will Be Different
Holidays are coming...and that means Invasion of family and food. Augh!
I know what you’re thinking. “I might be stuck with family, but I can at least control the food part of all this. THIS YEAR, I’m gonna eat less and get my butt to the gym. THIS YEAR, no holiday weight gain!”
Sounds like a good choice.
Or does it?
Let me get this right: on top of all the extra chores, parties, responsibilities, expectations, shopping, over-spending and holiday crazy, you want to add ANOTHER task or two to the list -- diet and exercise?
Yeah. How long you think you can keep that up before you snap?
Call me crazy, but what say we try something different? Slow down. Take care of yourselves. Enjoy the season. Have a cup of eggnog once in a while.
======================
Here’s a little story.... [take a deep breath]
At holiday time, I used to decorate the house, string popcorn for the tree, make my own Christmas cards, design homemade wreaths, bake for friends, family, work and even my husband’s holiday work parties, do all the gift shopping, create homemade wrapping paper, clean obsessively, plus I got up at 5am every day so I could run 3 miles before going to my 50 hr/week job.
Do I know how to make bad choices, or what? .
Time out for some math solutions to help out with these bad choices.
Add in self care. Be kind to your body
Subtract out as much crazy as possible. Lose the holiday drama. [now THAT’S a holiday weight loss program I can support.]
But here’s the $64,000 question, Pookie: Who cares?
No, really, who cares if you work out daily or design your own greeting cards or if you don’t make your famous peppermint brownies? These are all nice, but are they truly necessary?
Ask yourself this.... If I DON’T do [xyz], will it matter 3 months from now?
And then ask this...If I DO [xyz], will it bring joy to my holiday?
Look, I love your brownies as much as the next guy, but more importantly, I love to see you enjoying the season. I love to see you put yourself first.
Over 90% of people fail when they try to change. [goals, diets, resolutions]
What do the remaining 8% do to succeed? What’s their big secret?
They ask for help.
Ball’s in your court.
