First Things First
Holiday blues? Crazy family dynamics? Can’t seem to find a moment of peace?
Get in line with me, Peaches....
There’s a new age belief that says: We Become What we Think About. So if I want peace or happiness, I need to think positive, happy thoughts.
And if you believe the brain is running the show, that makes sense.
However, if you believe the heart is more powerful than the brain, this makes MORE sense : We Become What We Love.
With that in mind, I have a bold thought for you: Do you include yourself on the list of Things You Love? Dare you put yourself FIRST, even?
We can't put everyone else first and expect to receive care for our needs at the same time.
Sounds selfish and incredibly incongruent with the holiday season, yes?
I disagree and here’s why:
What we put first in our lives is what WE receive from life.
So if we put ourselves second, we receive just that: we get “seconds” or leftover love, as I call it.
Back to the idea of being selfish...I get that giving may be a priority to you, BUT YOU CAN’T GIVE WHAT YOU DON’T HAVE.
The reason we find ourselves depressed, angry or upset is because we expected that after all we did, people would love us or appreciate us. [They didn’t.] So we kept giving and hoping until ultimately, we ran out of gas.
Not everything we love loves us back. Not everything we serve serves us --at least not as we expected. We suffer because we handed over our heart to other people, pretending we were putting them first. The reality is we were making it their job to make us happy.
We can only experience life as what we are.
From this new awareness, a dormant surrender -filled with power-- is awakened within us. It is a prayer to the Divine: Please step in. Hold my hand and show me the Way.
This practicing of the Presence places us in a new position. We agree to have a new "first" within us-- our relationship with the Divine. We agree to put our relationship with God before all of our other concerns.
It is from this practice I promise you will find your new position with God. You will find that God holds you safely in Her heart.
You will also find She never let you go.
