Destructive Beliefs Be Gone!
Sounds like a mosquito spray, huh? Wish it was that easy.
In lieu of the spray, try these tacts to deal with destructive thoughts and beliefs. It’s a real game changer, I mean brain-changer.
First: RECOGNIZE that this belief is a brain pattern that often has nothing to do with the present. It’s literally a rut, a groove in your mind. 90% of our behavior is habitual. We behave without thinking. Any thoughts that are outside our known are so uncomfortable, the brain does everything to restore “normalcy.” [“I need that cigarette. I can’t think without a cup of coffee. I never leave work before my boss.”] Notice I didn’t sat “healthy”… Second: understand that your brain boils down information into mini "sound bytes" that over-generalize, oversimplify and awful-ize the topic or issue. [“I’m going to get fired. I’m losing my mind. He’s going to hate me.”] We scare ourselves silly. Third: Identify your CORE VALUES/BELIEFS and then see if they match with your current beliefs and actions. [I value taking care of myself as I agree to work without taking a day off. DISCONNECT!] Actions [based on beliefs] and values must align, or prepare for a bumpy ride. Fourth: RELEASE your old belief and action by observing it without judgment. It's just a memory tied to old images, feelings, and thoughts. [“Oh look…here’s that old belief that I never finish things… oh, here I am taking that habitual action of blaming myself…isn’t that interesting?”] Fifth: REFRAME it. Create a new belief based on your core value, not another’s version of you. Create a new way to see yourself. Then RETRAIN your brain to believe it. [“I enoy finishing what I start. How unlike me to not complete this.”]
Sixth: VISUALIZE yourself doing this new behavior and add some feel-good emotions to the visual. I picture new roads forming in my mind, for me to travel down, doing the new behavior.
