There presently is the possibility of this area being affected by a hurricane this weekend. Everyone should anticipate the possibility of being isolated for the duration of the storm, and prepare accordingly. Roads may be impassable either due to debris, downed wires, of flooding conditions. Electrical power and water supply could be interrupted for periods of time. 2. Everyone should immediately perform the following action: a. Listen to the radio/television for updates of the hurricane. If power fails, use a battery-powered radio. b. Make sure your cell phone is charged c. Have items such as canned food, water, flashlights, batteries, etc. Refill any necessary medications. Ensure you have workable flashlights or battery operated lanterns. d. Inspect the exterior of your home for any items (i.e., tables, chairs, umbrellas, chimes, toys, etc.) that may become airborne in the case of high winds and create a safety hazard to the area. Bring those items indoors or tie them down securely. e. Secure garage doors and windows. f. Check your car, tires and fill the gas tank in your vehicle. g. Store a water supply for drinking and other purposes. Have sufficient food on hand, especially items that can be eaten without cooking. h. Bring pets inside. i. Make sure your sump pump is operational if you have one installed j. Ensure you have enough cash on-hand to make necessary purchases for a few days after a hurricane (power outages may prevent use of ATM’s and credit card transactions). k. Gather important papers in one spot so you can take them with you if, as a last resort, you have to leave for any reason. l. Watch for live electrical wires, shattered glass, splintered wood, and debris as well as structural damage if you do have need to go outside. Following these tips are critical to being prepared.
