So, the time has come to expand your roofing business. Business is good work is coming in thick and fast so you are now in a position to hire a new roofer to help your business go from strength to strength but where do you start? Hiring good tradesman has always been a tricky business and this becomes more difficult when looking for an experienced or trainee roofer. This is because being a roofer is not an easy job often you will have to work at height and in all elements. Luckily, we are on hand to help and give you some tips to help you find an experienced roofer or an enthusiastic trainer roofer to join your team. Why is it so hard to find people interested to join the construction industry? To understand what makes finding the right roofer difficult we have to understand the whole picture. The construction industry is always growing but what we have seen recently is a reduction in the number of people interested in entering into the construction industry. This is down to a number of factors but the biggest one being the image the construction industry portrays of long hours in all weather conditions. Most school leavers now would prefer an office job that can offer a greater salary and better working conditions than most trades positions can. This is why finding the right candidate for your business is not easy because the pool of people that would have been interested a few years ago is significantly smaller. So, what can you do to make sure you find the best roofer? Be open to training an apprenticeOf course, everyone would love nothing more than to hire an experienced roofer but that can prove difficult for a few reasons. Most experienced workers will either already be working for themselves or won’t want to leave their current employer and if they are willing to move it will most certainly be for a substantial pay increase. A more viable option may be to give youth a chance and hire an apprentice: roofers in the making. Choosing this option comes with many benefits first of you will increase the hiring pool to include school leavers who are enthusiastic and generally interested in the trade and secondly it is a long-term investment as most apprentices tend to stay with the employer that gave them a chance in the first place. You are in essence choosing to invest your time initially instead of large sums of money which ultimately pays off ten-fold in years to come. Hire a womanControversial statement I know but allow us to explain. Over the years there has been a sort of stigma attached to women entering the construction industry the narrative being that it’s a man’s world and women cannot do the work as well as a man and this is simply not true. More and more women are working in the construction industry than ever before and rightly so. If you were to open your recruitment net to include female applicants, you would double the number of candidates to choose from which increases your chances of finding the right person for the job. Have an effective recruitment policySimply advertising in your local newspaper won’t find you the perfect candidate. You need to be active in your approach and utilize different approaches to ensure to engage with the people most suited to your role. When recruiting by all means use the local newspaper but also engage local job boards and public listings. Also consider approaching local schools to target school leavers and perhaps even organize an open day to give more information to potential candidates. Once you have done all of the above you will want to organize interviews for your candidates in the interview you can discuss the pay working hours and expectations. If hiring an apprentice, you can explain the education process and how you will train them step by step. SummaryIn summary recruitment for any specific trade is not easy however when focusing on a specific trade such as a roofer you can make your search much more specific to mirror the character traits and skills required for the job. If you are open to using the techniques mentioned above, then this will open your search allow you to reach more potential candidates and identify the best candidate for you. Remember recruitment isn’t a quick process however it is not something you want to rush, and your patience will pay off in the end.
