Thinking of starting a band? You should start practising in your garage if these examples are anything to go by. Back in the days before garages were insulated and before there were remote controlled garage doors, these guys were busy making music. If you are considering converting your garage into a music studio and need some inspiration, here is a list of some of the most well-known bands who started out playing in their own garages compiled by specialist concrete garage company Dencroft Garages… NIRVANA Arguably one of the most famous American bands of recent years, Nirvana was formed by Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic in Washington in 1987. One of the most influential bands of the modern era, Nirvana started out with humble beginnings finding success on college radio stations before being catapulted into stardom after their 1992 appearance on the MTV music awards. THE RAMONES Though none of them were related, all members of The Ramones changed their surname to ‘Ramone’. One of the most famous bands to come out of a garage in New York, The Ramones are known as the first punk band, with their most well-known song being ‘I Wanna Be Sedated’. In 2011, the band was awarded a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. Not bad to say they started out playing in a garage! THE KINKS The Kinks were an English band who started out in a garage in North London, and rose to fame in the 1960s. They are regarded as one of the most important bands of the era, and were part of the British Invasion of the US. The Kinks reached prominence in 1964 with their international hit ‘You Really Got Me’ and went on to influence many Britpop bands such as Blur and Oasis. THE RUNAWAYS The Runaways were an all-female American band in the 1970s. Their most famous song was ‘Cherry Bomb’, and the famous female rock musicians who came out of the group were Joan Jett, who went on to find success with the hit ‘Bad Reputation’ and guitarist Lita Ford. THE WHO The Who were are English band who formed in London in 1964. For most of their career The Who were known as one of the most important British rock bands of all time along with The Beatles and the Rolling Stones. One of their most well-known songs was ‘My Generation’. The band continued to play during the 2000s, but announced in 2014 they would be retiring after a final album and accompanying tour. THE YARDBIRDS The Yardbirds were a London band in the 1960s who had hits such as ‘For Your Love’ and were notable for having started the careers of some of the most famous guitarists of all time, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck. The band reformed in the 1990s and were introduced to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992. WEEZER The most recent band by far on this list, American alternative rock band Weezer started out in 1992 in a Los Angeles garage rented out by the group. This same garage is used in the video for their single ‘Say It Ain’t So’ and since then the band has sold over 17,000 albums worldwide. The band are still going and their ninth album, Things Will Be Alright in the End, is out October 2014. THE BEATLES Before forming The Beatles, John Lennon played in a band with his friends in his garage. He and The Beatles went on to be the most famous and influential band of the rock era. The names John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr are now synonymous with rock music and as well as having more UK number one albums and singles than any other band, they are the biggest selling music artist in the USA.
